Another Question?

Hi, all.

So, just to let you all know, my computer tech was over here helping me replace the receiver, and he noticed that my power strip didn't have built-in surge protection; in other words, it was just a power strip. He told me that power strips with surge protection have a label that is measured in jewels instead of amps or volts. So, that's probably why the receiver, my Sony, which I actually like better than my Denon thus far, stopped functioning. Do any of you guys have a UPS, or an uninterruptable power supply or backup for your computers? If so, which ones are good brands? The really stupid thing is, that they are called uninterruptable, but they only allow your computer to work off of battery for about 15 minutes.

Secondly, my Denon is all configured, but my current channel configuration is stereo; shouldn't it be 5.1? When I do alter the stereo setting to 5.1, the rear speakers don't work; this is probably a setting on the receiver, right?

Nathan.

No, it's a coding in the movie you are watching or the game you are playing.
A good surge protector should be good enough. Lots of them available. Some even come with protection if your equipment gets toasted.
Google that, and you'll find them. I can't think of brands of the top of my head.

Oh, so should I have the receiver on stereo or 5.1? Even when I'm not playing a game, and just have Jaws going through this channel, the two speakers don't work. Stereo is much louder because of this as well. Also, what is the benefit of a UPS with built-in surge protection over a power surge protector?

One has a backup battery so if the natural power goes out, you don't lose your data if say you are working on something and the computer goes off.
Also you can still work when the powers out for a time, or listen to music.
Sereo of course is better if you are listening to stereo items. Get a movie or game in 5.1, you want it set up that way.

That's what I thought. But when I set it up this way, two speakers, the rear ones, don't work. It might be a setting in the receiver, like the speakers are turned down.

Get a game or something coded in 5.1. You'll hear these rear speakers kicking when or if something makes them go.
Example, a car driving will go around, or maybe the picture is showing a monster coming up from behind you, it will sound like it too.

Hm, I'll have to have someone look at it, I guess.

No. You need a game or movie coded in 5.1 audio. Have you simply tried this?
Rent one and see how it works.

Yes, nothing is working.

Yes, what? You actually got a movie coded in 5.1? Are you sure?
Also it doesn't work all the time only when something happens to bring the sound out.

Yep, pretty sure. Usually, the speakers work, but just for background music and stuff.

They will work for lots more. It just depends on the game or movie.

Hm, still haven't gotten it to work. Watched the Advengers. Should have been coded in five point one.

I got all speakers working, but all output voices on a movie along with other sound effects. Is this normal? Even the rear speakers do this.

Do you have a sighted friend, or someone to watch one of these movies with you, or who plays these games that are coded in this fashion?
Maybe that person can come over and show you how it works, or you can go to his or her place and experience it.
That be about the only way you'd understand how it is suppose to be, and the sighted person would tell you "okay Nathan, in a bit check this out." They'll make it go, and you'll get it.

Yeah, but I won't be able to troubleshoot this until I return from being out of town.

The way my old Sony receiver used to work was that the three front speakers, the center, left, and right, all output voices, but the two rear ones just put out sound effects. I have put on several movies which are coded in five point one, with the same result. It's kind of weird.. But, hopefully, it's just a setting on the receiver, but just in case, I will check the return date from Amazon to make sure.

Thanks,

Nathan.
